All good things come to an end and this semester couldn't have ended at a worse time. Our son, Luca is 25 days old today. I'll tell you, juggling a 3 week old and trying to finish this project as well as some of my other projects, was quite the task. Regardless, I am here, at the end of the semester and there is much rejoicing to be had. This project that I have been working on is an analysis of the food deserts in Orange County, Florida. I used open source programs such as QGIS, Mapbox, and Leaflet to build, create a web map, and host it with the use of some javascript. I used QGIS to import shapefiles that I had collected and created a basemap of Orange County. From here I used the functions available in QGIS as well as a little help from ArcPro with the near tool in order to create an analysis map of the food deserts in the area. After completing this, I had shapefiles for food deserts as well as the shapefiles I made in google earth of the grocery stores(had to convert the grocery stores to a .kml in order to import them to ArcPro). I then saved those shapefiles and accessed Mapbox. I uploaded the shapefiles as tilesets on Mapbox and created a new style layout with my 2 shapefiles. From here, I used the share option and used the URL in a javascript code that was written using leaflet and I then hosted it from my I drive. These software are pretty powerful considering anybody has access to them. VGI is going to be a major portion of the future when it comes to GIS, it is just so much more practical when it comes to somebody at their house running data analysis. It's not necessary to have ArcGIS software if you can use these.
This semester has been a challenge to say the least. I without a doubt, feel 10x more knowledgable and experienced. I am starting the graduate program for GIS administration in the spring and can't wait to begin!
